ECU engine control unit removal

ECU Cloning

ECU cloning is the process of reading and writing the full data contents of one ECU to another, allowing a replacement or donor unit to function identically to the original. Useful when the original unit cannot be reprogrammed via normal dealer software.

When Is ECU Cloning Needed?

  • Faulty or damaged ECU requiring replacement with a donor unit
  • Secondhand ECU from a breaker that needs matching to your vehicle
  • ECU failure with no dealership support or prohibitive dealer costs
  • Avoiding the need to recode keys, immobilisers, and modules after a swap

Supported Vehicles & Platforms

We offer broad coverage across petrol and diesel platforms including European, Asian, and American makes. Common brands supported include VAG group, BMW, Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, PSA group, and more. Enquire about your specific vehicle to confirm compatibility.

Immobiliser Delete

An immobiliser delete involves removing or bypassing the factory immobiliser system from the ECU software, allowing the engine to start independently of the original key/transponder system. This is a specialist service carried out at the software level.

Common Use Cases

  • Lost or damaged keys where replacement is not viable
  • Faulty immobiliser unit causing a no-start condition
  • Immobiliser faults after ECU replacement or cloning
  • Motorsport or track-use vehicles where the immobiliser is not required
  • Replacement ECU that cannot be synchronised to the original keys

The ECU is read, the immobiliser routines are located and removed from the firmware, and the ECU is rewritten. In most cases the ECU can be sent to us by post, or we can carry out the work on-site. Contact us to confirm compatibility for your specific vehicle.

Electronic Steering Lock Repair & Emulator Modules

Electronic steering lock (ESL) failures are a common fault across a range of modern vehicles, often resulting in the vehicle being undriveable. We offer both direct repair of the original ESL unit and the fitting of emulator modules that permanently bypass the ESL mechanism — the most reliable long-term solution.

Common Failure Symptoms

  • Steering lock warning light on dashboard
  • Vehicle will not start — steering column locked
  • Intermittent steering lock activation while driving
  • ESL module not communicating on diagnostic scan
  • Error codes referencing steering lock or column lock unit

Why Choose an Emulator Module?

An emulator module replaces the physical lock mechanism with a solid-state electronic solution — it communicates with the vehicle's systems as if the original ESL is present but eliminates the mechanical failure point entirely. This is especially recommended for high-mileage vehicles or where OEM parts are discontinued. As well as the fact these are replaced for a fraction of a genuine module through the dealerships.

Supported Makes & Models

Supported vehicles include Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Renault, Nissan, and others. Contact us to confirm compatibility for your specific make, model, and year.

DPF & EGR Delete Services

These services are intended for off-road use, motorsport applications, or high-mileage vehicles experiencing repeated DPF/EGR-related faults. All work is carried out at the ECU software level. Customers should check applicable regulations for their intended use.

DPF Delete

A DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) delete involves removing the DPF regeneration routines and associated fault monitoring from the ECU software. This prevents the vehicle from attempting to regenerate a blocked or failing DPF, eliminating associated power loss, excessive fuel consumption, and limp-mode events.

Suited To:

  • Off-road and 4x4 vehicles
  • Motorsport and competition use
  • High-mileage diesel vehicles with recurring DPF faults
  • Plant and agricultural machinery (where applicable)

EGR Delete

An EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) delete removes the EGR valve control logic from the ECU, preventing the reintroduction of exhaust gases into the intake. This resolves EGR-related fault codes, eliminates carbon buildup issues associated with EGR operation, and can improve throttle response and engine cleanliness.

Suited To:

  • Vehicles with recurring EGR fault codes
  • High-mileage engines suffering from intake carbon buildup
  • Off-road or motorsport applications
  • Vehicles where EGR valve replacement costs are prohibitive

Stage 1 ECU Remapping

Stage 1 tuning is the entry-level ECU remap — the vehicle's factory ECU map is read, modified to optimise fuelling, boost pressure, ignition timing, and rev limits, and written back to the ECU. No hardware modifications are required, making this a clean and reversible upgrade.

Typical Performance Gains

Gains vary by vehicle but typical Stage 1 remaps deliver 15-30% increases in power and torque on turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Naturally aspirated gains are more modest. Specific before/after figures depend on the vehicle platform and original factory detuning level.

Compatible Vehicle Types

  • Turbocharged petrol engines (common rail and direct injection)
  • Turbocharged diesel engines
  • Mild hybrid platforms (where ECU access permits)
  • Hot hatch, performance, and fast-road road cars
  • Vans and light commercial vehicles

How We Differ From Generic Remaps

Every remap is carried out on a vehicle-specific basis — we read your ECU, build a calibration for your engine and condition, and do not use off-the-shelf generic map files. This ensures safe and optimised results for your specific vehicle. Generally carried out on bench giving a safer more reliable read/service than some onboard applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our services, legality, compatibility, and process. If you don't find your answer here, contact us directly.

  • Are immobiliser deletes and ECU remaps legal?
This depends entirely on intended use. Immobiliser deletes, DPF/EGR deletes, and some remaps are legal for off-road, motorsport, and track-use vehicles. For road-registered vehicles, it is the customer's responsibility to ensure their vehicle remains compliant with applicable road traffic and emissions regulations. We do not provide legal advice — please confirm your obligations before proceeding.
  • Does my vehicle need to be physically present?

For many services, including ECU cloning, immobiliser deletes, and some remaps, the ECU can be removed and sent to us by post. For some steering lock emulator fitting and Stage 1 remapping, the vehicle typically needs to be with us. Contact us with your vehicle details and we'll confirm the best approach.

  • How long does each service take?
Postal ECU services (cloning, immobiliser delete) are typically turned around within 1-3 working days of receiving the unit. Steering lock emulator fitting and Stage 1 remaps are usually completed within the same day or next-day appointment. Turnaround times may vary during busy periods — contact us to get a current estimate.
  • Is my vehicle compatible?
We cover a broad range of makes and models including VAG group, BMW, Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, PSA group, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and many others. Compatibility depends on the specific service and ECU variant. The best way to confirm is to contact us with your vehicle's make, model, year, and engine code.
  • Can I have my ECU sent back to standard afterwards?

For Stage 1 remaps, we retain your original map file and can return the ECU to standard calibration if required. For other services such as immobiliser delete, reversal depends on the specific work carried out but where possible we just about always keep the original file on record— ask us at the time of enquiry if this is a requirement.

  • What happens if my ECU is damaged during the process?

We take every precaution to protect ECU units throughout the read/write process using professional-grade equipment. In the unlikely event of a fault occurring during the procedure, we will work with you to resolve the issue. Even thought htis would be a very rare scenario we recommend discussing this with us before sending any unit. We back up all data prior to carrying out any programming.
